Established in 2004, School of Music and the Arts (SOMA) is a premier music institution in Singapore, focusing on contemporary music performance and career skills in Songwriting, Music Production and Audio Engineering. Registered with the Committee for Private Education (CPE) in Singapore, SOMA continues to offer a world-class education centered on practical skills and relevant technologies for today’s music professionals.
SOMA also offers a range of Classical Music Education for Theory, Vocals, and Piano, using the ABRSM curriculum. Contemporary Music Classes we teach follows the Rockschool syllabus. We continuously push our students to exceed their limits by going for graded exams. SOMA aims to provide today’s generation of creative individuals with not only an all-rounded education, but also a platform to grow, perform, network and eventually turn their passion into a career.
To ensure we deliver a World Class Education, SOMA hires only the best instructors in the region – they are either graduates from the renowned Berklee College of Music (Boston, USA) or well-known professionals in the music industry who have worked with international artistes including Stefanie Sun, JJ Lin, Switchfoot, Michael Learns To Rock, Hady Mirza, Stereophonics, A*mei, Jeremy Monteiro, and Sammi Cheng. These highly qualified instructors are carefully selected to effectively impart their knowledge and skills, and at the same time, share real-world scenarios with students based on their vast performing and production experiences.
SOMA strives to provide students with the ideal learning environment – a careful balance of both structure and creativity. Performing opportunities, internships and industry attachments, excursions to concerts and recording studios, and master classes by visiting artistes are just some of the activities organized for students to learn beyond the classroom.
In addition, our recording studio, classrooms and computer labs are fitted with top-notch recording equipment, instruments and amplifiers, along with the latest software used in today’s music industry. These facilities are open to all students for project work and assignments, practice time, rehearsals or simply jamming together.
More than a music school, SOMA continues to redefine music education in Singapore by reinventing teaching approaches, redeveloping existing curriculum to remain relevant to today’s industry demands, and encouraging creativity and innovation in students, with the goal of producing future leaders in the arts community.
