The origins of Yamaha date back to 1887 when company founder Torakusu Yamaha successfully repaired an imported reed organ and shortly thereafter built the very first reed organ in Japan. Since then, Yamaha has taken on challenges to meet a wide range of customer needs relating to music, education, and culture. In 1954, Yamaha started organ classes in Japan, which were the predecessor to the Yamaha Music School.
The Yamaha brand was introduced to Singapore by Mr Gen-ichi Kawakami, the then-President of Nippon Gakki Co. Ltd now known as Yamaha Corporation. He believed that music was a basic form of human expression and was determined to contribute to Singapore by offering premium music education and quality musical products to the masses.
And in 1966, Yamaha Music (Asia) was formed. We began selling musical instruments in a shophouse along Serangoon Road. Two years later, we offered music courses from two small studios.
The Pop Music Education Department and Contempo Music School were set up in 1988 to address the shifts in demand to learn pop music. Mindful of the lifestyle needs of working adults, we are dedicated to help students from beginners to advanced musicians, learn and improve performance techniques comfortably and enjoyably. Our lessons utilise authentic Yamaha teaching materials, our curriculum cultivated by the rich history of Yamaha’s education system. Repertoires used during lessons feature a diverse range of musical genres for all ages. Together with the use of technology, a wide range of courses – including band, vocal, wind and string ensemble, and solo keyboard – are made available for students.
Similar to the Yamaha Music School, our group lessons offer highly effective instructions and meaningful interaction between fellow students. Group lessons allow students to learn the sense of harmony and balance required when performing ensembles – one of the many advantages that cannot be experienced in individual lessons. As a promise of quality excellence, every instructor must undergo training before conducting a class. This is our pledge to students as the premier music company in Singapore. We strive for higher music literacy across the nation, and to promote a love for all kinds of music across all ages.
